It has been on display since 2007 made by local sculpture Tom Leaper as a memorial to honour past fisherman who have sadly lost their lives at sea. With over 20 local fishermen losing their lives since 1980 the artwork is a place where locals and visitors can all pay their respects when looking out to sea. This view is from part of Newlyn harbour called the Old Quay, Built in 1435 the old quay in Newlyn is a medieval quay and was the final port of the famous mayflower on its voyage to America, stopping of to pick up fresh water. Built to protect the harbour from wild sees and even wilder pirates, over the centuries Newlyn and neighbouring Penzance were victims of countless pirate raids, continuing until the late 1800’s. The old quay is no longer in use for commercial fishing as Newlyn has expanded its harbour and become one of the largest working harbours in the UK.
